Wow, turns out this is gonna longer than I expected........

On with the list!

33. Symphonic Metal - “Storm the Sorrow” by Epica

Incorporation of classical orchestras and arrangements into traditional heavy metal.

34. Symphonic Black Metal - “The Sacrilegious Scorn” by Dimmu Borgir

Black metal ft. an orchestra. Tends to be slightly less harsh that classic black metal.

35. Symphonic Power Metal - “Emerald Sword” by Rhapsody of Fire

Classical music that’s disguised as metal. This is what happens when you add the epic-ness of orchestral instruments into a style that already heavily leans on fantastical themes.

36. Symphonic Gothic Metal - “Ice Queen” by Within Temptation

A grandiose combination of gothic metal and symphonic metal.

37. Symphonic Death Metal - “The Fool” by Fleshgod Apocalypse

When the brutality of death metal and the majesty of symphonic metal join forces.

38. Groove Metal“Cowboys from Hell” by Pantera

Tonally and sonically similar to thrash metal but instead of fast and frantic its usually mid-tempo, rhythmically syncopated and grooving.

39. Grunge (or Seattle Sound if you wanna be super edgy)“Dirt” by Alice In Chains

Technically a subgenre of rock, but on the heavier spectrum of grunge we commonly find slow, angsty, bleak and dissonant vibes.

40. Sludge Metal - “Honey Bucket” by Melvins

Sludge metal combines the raw aggression of hardcore punk with the dark pessimism of doom metal and the dense, sludgy dirt of grunge.

41. Stoner Metal (aka desert rock) – “Gardenia” by Kyuss

A fusion of groovy, low-focus riffage with trippy, psychedelic sections that is heavy enough to reduce the very ground upon which we have built our civilisation to a state of primordial jelly.

42. Stoner Sludge“Funeralopolis” by Electric Wizard

Stoner + sludge, fuzz + murk, groovy jamz + dark saturation. Call it what you want, the result is disgustingly heavy.

43. Rap Metal - “Know Your Enemy” by Rage Against the Machine (ft. Maynard James Keenan)

Rap rock meets alternative metal.

44. Funk Metal - “John the Fisherman” by Primus

Slapped bass-lines, syncopated, busy drum beats and rhythmically angular and heavy guitars.

45. Djent (or dj0nt)“Make Total Destroy” by Periphery

A technically complex, polyphonic offshoot of progressive metal that gets its name from the low, high gain, heavily palm-muted riffing that defines it.

46. Mathcore – “Precipice/All We Love We Leave Behind” by Converge

With roots in hardcore, mathcore emphasises rhythmic intricacy and is the musical equivalent of complex algebra.

47. Glam Metal (or hair metal)“Kickstart My Heart” by Mötley Crüe

Commercially oriented heavy metal, featuring catchy hooks and riffs and flamboyant aesthetics.

48. Pagan Metal - “Lauf der Welt” by Finsterforst

Heavy metal that incorporates pagan ideologies, closely related to folk metal.

49. Alternative Metal“Aerials” by System of a Down

A heavier version of alternative rock, featuring typical aspects of heavy metal along with an eccentric weirdness that can vary exponentially depending on the artist.

50. Post-metal (aka Art Metal) “The Creeper” by Pelican

Like post-rock, features experimental textures and a strong sense of atmosphere but takes on a darker tone that one might expect from heavy or even extreme metal.

51. Gothic Metal - “Todos os Santos” by Moonspell

Dark and gloomy themes of a gothic nature with heavy instrumentation.

52. Viking Metal“…Where His Ravens Fly…” by Falkenbach

Heavy metal that takes most of its inspiration from Norse mythology.

53. Pirate Metal“Drink” by Alestorm

Heavy metal that takes most of its inspiration from pirate mythology.

54. Folk Metal “Rasputin” by Turisas (original by Boney M.)

Folk music played on heavy guitars, bass and drums that also widely incorporates traditional folk instruments that vary depending on where the band comes from.

55. Celtic Metal “The Middle Kingdom” by Cruachan

More or less folk metal that specifically focusses on Irish and Celtic lore.

56. Medieval Metal“Liebeszauber” by Subway to Sally

Metal with a Middle Age spin; with instruments, themes and other source material borrowed from tradition.

57. Power Metal“Through the Fire and Flames” by DragonForce

The most dramatic and sensational metal subgenre, it kind of sounds like happy speed or thrash metal.

58. Avant-garde Metal (or experimental metal) - “Book 1: Page 4” by Fantômas

Just weird, it seems Avant-metal bands don’t really give a flying f***.

59. Neoclassical Metal“Far Beyond the Sun” by Yngwie Malmsteen (okay Yngwie, we get it, you’re a god)

Incredibly technically challenging and virtuosic metal that leans heavily into classical music ideologies.

60. Crust Punk “Winter” by Amebix

Not dissimilar to crossover thrash, crust punk is the illegitimate child of punk rock and extreme metal.

61. Industrial Metal“Replica” by Fear Factory

Metal that incorporates the harsh and abrasive soundscapes of industrial music.

62. Biker Metal “Rage of Angels” by Orange Goblin

A brotherhood between heavy metal, punk rock, rock ‘n’ roll and blues that has a very gritty sound.

63. Latin Metal “How Can I Live” by Ill Niño

Heavy metal that features Latin influences such as Spanish vocals, Latin rhythms and Latin instrumentation.

64. Grindcore “When All is Said and Done” by Napalm Death

Extreme, metallic, rough and grinding are all traits commonly associated with this brutal transfusion between metal and punk.

65. Deathgrind“Leatherface” by Benighted

Like grindcore, except even more horrible as it incorporates the crushing brutality of death metal.

66. Goregrind“After Accident” by Dead Infection

A disgustingly visceral outgrowth of grindcore.

67. Pornogrind – Nope, I’m out. I can’t even bring myself to type in the song title.

Here’s the link, I IMPLORE YOU TO PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION.

68. Kawaii Metal - “Megitsune” by BABYMETAL

Heavy metal meets J-pop, now I’ve heard everything. Stay classy Japan XD.

That’s all folks, I shall leave you with the immortal words of Tenacious D:

“No one can destroy the metal The metal will strike you down with a vicious blow We are the vanquished foes of the metal We tried to win for why we do not know”

Peace out and stay \M/etal my dudes.
